The Lost City Trek To Ciudad Perdida, Columbia

The Challenge

This trek is the real Indiana Jones experience. Rivers to cross, pack horses, jungle trails, hills valleys, animals and creatures of all descriptions and fabulous scenery.

We fly to Cartagena, the location for ‘Romancing the Stone’ film. We are taken in a minibus to Santa Marta and next day we have time to look around the town and swim in the Caribbean. Next day we start the trek which lasts 5 days as we walk 65 miles return trip to the Lost City.

The walk is very undulating but there are regular stops for fruit and drinks on the way and usually daily there is time for a swim at some point in the clear river that runs through the valley. Each night we stay in a camp and have a choice of a bed or a hammock to sleep in with mosquito nets for protection. Often at night, the sound of very large but harmless toads can be heard close by. Meals are provided each day with breakfast, a large lunch and evening meal.

We usually have an early start each day before the sun gets too hot. Appropriate headwear for protection is advised.

Nearing the Lost City we should see parrots and monkeys as well as large spiders, grasshopper, frogs and black squirrels. We have 1200 steps to ascend steeply just before the city then on arrival, a further 400 steps from the first base to the top one. The views all round are breathtaking as we have two hours or more to rest, eat and wander the lost city taking lots of photos.

We return to the previous base camp to spend the night before trekking back the next day to where we started and a final meal there before returning to Santa Marta.

Challenge prices

Total cost for 2020 is £1800.

A similar trip with other companies costs around £2600.

This trip is a lot cheaper that other companies due to direct personal service and sourcing of established local companies and qualified guides in the trek area.

Due to fuel costs rising, the airlines sometimes charge a fuel supplement. In common with similar companies, in the unlikely event that there is a fuel cost supplement charged, you must pay this, but Outdoor Challenge Events will cap it at £250 meaning we will stand the difference.
