The challenge of walking to the highest peak of the UK is one of the ultimate goals of many people. Breathtaking scenery, fresh clean air and a sense of freedom are what you get when you reach the summit.
The start of our trek is the visitor centre in Glen Nevis, crossing the footbridge over the River Nevis then working our way up the mountain with frequent stops to view the surroundings and for photos along the way. Approaching the higher slopes, we stop to adjust our clothing as it gets colder as we get higher. Arriving on the summit, we admire the views in all directions and hopefully get some photos. There are lots to see on and from the summit like the old observatory and hotel, the emergency shelter and the views of the lochs, glens and Caledonian Canal.
After a lunch stop on the summit or just before it, we return on the “tourist track” again to the glen below. The scenery in all directions (subject to weather) is outstanding from start to finish.
Some people like to complete this challenge as part of walking the National 3 Peaks. Ben Nevis is the ideal mountain to start. You do not have to walk the 3 peaks consecutively.
