The Challenge
The challenge of walking to the highest peak of the UK is one of the ultimate goals for many people. Breath-taking scenery, fresh clean air and a sense of freedom are what you get during the walk to the summit.
We meet early in the car park at Fort William and after a briefing of the event, we start our trek by the visitor centre in Glen Nevis, crossing the footbridge over the River Nevis then working our way up the mountain with frequent stops to view the surroundings and take photos along the way. Approaching the higher slopes, we stop to adjust our clothing as it gets colder as we get higher. Arriving on the summit, we admire the views in all directions and hopefully get some photos. There are lots to see on and from the summit such as the old observatory and hotel, the emergency shelter and the views of the lochs, glens and Caledonian Canal.
After a lunch stop near the summit, we return on the “tourist track” again to the glen below. The scenery in all directions (subject to weather) is outstanding throughout the trek.
Arriving back in the glen, we have a hot late breakfast before a certificate presentation and departing.
Some people like to complete this challenge as part of walking the National 3 Peaks. Ben Nevis is the ideal mountain to start with.
Saturday Between 1am we meet in Fort William to 11am, details given later, or transport to Fort William only, (non- return if only doing Ben Nevis as minibus will be going on to Scafell Pike). Trains are available in Fort William (check times).
